Stonewall Communities is a community-based non-profit organization that advocates for and serves older lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender (LGBT) people. Our VisionWe envision a society where LGBT elders are active, healthy, visible and valued in their neighborhoods, in the LGBT community and in the broader society.Although our efforts are focused on the Boston and the New England area, we want to extend our reach, which is why we have created this online community. Now older LGBT people around the country and around the globe can share information, resources, personal interests and more, while keeping informed on the issues and concerns facing our community. Our goal is to put a whole new face on LGBT aging. Your face should be in the picture, too! Message from the Founder It is estimated that there are as many as 5 million gay men and lesbians 55 and older in America today - a number that will grow rapidly as Baby Boomers age. In Greater Boston alone we estimate there are 26,000 LGBT people ages 55 and above. In
spite of these numbers, LGBT seniors are largely invisible - even in the
gay community. We are routinely denied equal access to the benefits,
services, marriage rights and other legal rights, and social safety nets
that other seniors take for
granted. We are fragmented as a community and lack support and
solidarity when we need it most. With your help, we will change this. Stonewall Communities, Inc., a non-profit tax-exempt community-based organization, builds community among LGBT seniors and their friends and promotes better understanding of our needs. We are working to create educational, social, support and, ultimately, residential opportunities for older LGBTs and their allies. Join us as we create new possibilities for the rest of our lives! -David M. Aronstein, Founder, Stonewall Communities, Inc. Meet our Board of Directors.

We are part of the world-wide movement of Universities of the 3rd Age (U3A) and Lifelong Learning Institutes (LLIs). We are the first LLI organized by and for LGBT people over 50 and their friends of all ages. Our volunteers offer daytime Study Groups and workshops and evening panels during 10 week Spring and Fall semesters, as well as the January & February Winter Intersession. We offer social and educational excursions all year round. Study Groups and workshops are non-credit and selected by a Curriculum Committee on the basis of member requests and proposals. We strive for balance and variety in our programming. We are grateful to Wheelock College for free classroom space. We receive no funding from Wheelock or from government and depend upon fees, donations, small grants and volunteers. We welcome neighbors, heterosexual friends & allies, and LGBT people of all ages. |
